Fantasy Fiction Book: Angel in a Fur Coat
Author: C. L. Enuton
Written for ages: 7-11

School presentation for 3rd, 4th, and 5th grade classes:

Author and illustrator C.L. Enuton begins her presentation by introducing her book, Angel in a Fur Coat, and the characters within its pages based on her dogs from her childhood to present.
She explains the difference between fiction and non-fiction and the concept of the ‘what if’ question as the beginning process of creative writing.
The students are engaged in a discussion of how dogs help people and the different types of people’s assistant dogs: Therapy/Psychiatric  dogs; Service dogs for the hearing impaired, guide dogs, search and rescue dogs, police dogs, medical assistant dogs, and the family dog which I coined the name, leisure dogs.
The discussion thus far leads into the author's first ‘what if’ question. The basis of how the creative process of the storyline was created.
Dog breeds and their history are discussed giving the students a brief opportunity to highlight some of their own pets, leading the discussion into the history behind the breed of the main character of the book, the Pekingese.

The author shares the creative process of the fantasy aspect of writing which led to the second ‘what if’ question leading to the fantastical story of, Angel in a Fur Coat.
The presentation concludes with the discussion of editing, critiquing, and the joy of telling a story using all the senses to where the reader will feel, hear, taste, smell, and see, what you want them to experience.
Time permitted, a 6-minute video book trailer starring the main character of the book, Xia, with the help of her little brother, Augie Doggie, read (rap) an excerpt from the book, Angel in a Fur Coat.

At the end of each presentation, students may buy books and have them personalized and signed.
